Hell in a Handbag Productions is ringing in the holiday season with the return of its favorite seniors in the world premiere of The Golden Girls: The Lost Episodes – The Obligatory Holiday Special. The show is now playing through December 30, 2022, at The Hoover-Leppen Theatre at The Center on Halsted. Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, Sophia and their whacky friends and relatives shine in the all new episodes, written by Artistic Director David Cerda and directed by Spencer Davis.

The holidays take an unexpected turn for the gals when they find out that the infamous Shady Pines Retirement Community is on the verge of closing, leaving most of Sophia’s friends homeless for the holidays. Can the girls step in and save the day in time for Christmas? Will Rose be able to make it to St. Olaf in time for the ever-popular Herring Bowl Parade? These questions, and many more you never asked will be answered this newest installment of The Golden Girls: The Lost Episodes.

Now in its 21st season, Hell in a Handbag Productions, Chicago’s premier queer theatre company, is dedicated to preservation, exploration, and celebration of works ingrained in the realm of popular culture via theatrical productions through parody, music and homage. As such, the newest antics of The Golden Girls do not disappoint. If you grew up watching the TV show, admittedly perhaps through reruns, you will love this production. Delightfully effervescent and deliciously entertaining, the cast nail their characters’ idiosyncrasies perfectly. In a loving homage to Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, Handbag’s The Golden Girls are lovable and quirky. If you choose to watch one holiday themed show this season, support this one. Pure nostalgia.

Everyone’s favorite quartet of blue-haired ladies rallies together in support of their friends at Shady Pines Retirement Community, represented in the play by Sophia’s friend Nancy Drew (the role expertly performed on the opening night by the understudy Robert-Eric West, who did not miss a beat). And what better way to garner support than by putting on a variety show? For sheer entertainment value, this show within a show was a feast for all senses. Steeped in song, dance and Sophia’s inimitable sarcasm, this installment of The Golden Girls is all about helping others no matter the personal cost. And what is that, if not the real message of the holiday season?
