Otherworld Theatre Company, the premier sci-fi and fantasy live theatre production company in North America, premiered its first-ever original musical, Twihard! A Twilight Musical Parody, with music composed by Brian Rasmussen. This fang-tastic campy and creative take on the iconic Twilight saga has been EXTENDED to run through March 24th, 2024 at the storefront theatre’s venue located on Chicago’s North Side.
Bella is the introverted teenage protagonist with a penchant for attracting supernatural creatures, particularly vampires. She is the love interest of the brooding Edward, the captivating and mysterious vampire with a conflicted nature who falls deeply in love with the human, while struggling to control his primal instincts. Twihard! is the play for Twilight lovers and novices alike. Would you miss an occasional inside joke if you haven’t followed the series? Perhaps. But there are so many sidesplittingly funny moments that are fully accessibly, that a deep intimate knowledge of Twilight is hardly a requirement.
Twihard! is certainly campy, but because of the talented cast, it is also wildly entertaining. Rachel Arianna’s Bella channels her best Kristen Stewart mannerisms. Her singing voice is excellent, and Bella shines in musical numbers, both energetic and lyrical. Edward, played by Casey Huls, is brooding and aloof, lurking near Bella in his best Robert Pattinson cartoonish impersonation. And if your bingo card had “tap dancing vampire hunter” or “Daddy burlesque” on it, this place is certainly for you. We don’t want to give much away here. But whether you are Team Edward, Team Jacob, or (like me!) a complete Twilight novice, you will find Twihard! hilarious. Just trust us: anyone with a pulse will enjoy this performance. And we cannot wait for Twihard 2: Twi Harder.
