Originally produced in 1999 with Sweetback Productions, Joan Crawford Goes To Hell is a roller coaster ride that explores the life of the legendary Hollywood star. The premise? Joan Crawford dies, goes to hell and is forced to view her life through the eyes of her daughter, Christina in a tale so big it needs three Joans! Part Mommie Dearest, part biography with a dash of Joan’s lifestyle book, My Way of Life, Joan Crawford Goes to Hell is the perfect summer cocktail for those with a taste for camp.
Staged at The Clutch, an intimate boutique space in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, the play doesn’t take itself too seriously and makes that audience feel a part of the action. Three versions of Joan are completely different from one another, and yet somehow part of one individual person. Perhaps, the real Joan was a star so multifaceted, three versions were necessary. We definitely had our favorite Joan. But all three actors should be commended for their portrayals.
As we said previously, this play is for the fans of campy over-the-top action. Feeling demure? Perhaps stay home. But feeling dramatic and femme fatale? Grab a cocktail, a couple of drama queens amongst your friends, and prepare to have a rockin’ good time.
