I love som tum salad and can make my own…except I can’t find any green papaya in Chicago! Anyone know of a special grocer that carries it.

Just to make sure everyone knows, most of the papaya in stores is already ripe. What I need is the unripe stuff.
Thanks!

Never seen unripe one’s at a store. Might want to ask a the clerk at the store if the have any in the back.

Is there a Costco in your area. I see green papayas there all the time.

I just bought a green papaya at Shop and Save in Schaumburg. Not exactly Chicago, but I think it is a chain so the Chicago ones may have it. Many people may not be aware that even though all papayas are green on the outside, the one called a “Green Papaya” is actually different inside – so you need to see the store’s sign saying it is a green papaya to be sure. I would be very impressed if Costco has them, since it tends to have only fruits that are big sellers.
Argyle and Broadway has a huge Vietnamese grocery store. You could find anything you need for Som Tum. Have fun cooking.
