Most commonly, cabs are leased by the driver from a cab company.
Some drivers lease the cab for periods as short as one day, and they bring the cab back to the company at the end of the 24-hour period, where it is parked until someone else leases it.
However, most drivers lease the cab for longer than one day, and they park the cab wherever they want (often at home) when they’re not driving.

Most of them park on the street (the lease the cars so they’re their responsibility). And since most of the cab drivers are of foreign descent and they tend to live in the same areas together, certain parts of the city are filled with parked cabs at night when the drivers are off. For instance, check out Rogers Park at night. Sheridan Road is filled with parked cabs.
